Trump does "Brexit Plus, Plus, Plus."

(Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose"?)

Arrogance and incompetence wins over arrogance and corruption?

A desperate American public voted for someone "to make them great again" and "bring power back to the people". In practice I doubt he will do either but at least he promises to make friends with Putin which is something.

Of course the ever worsening Wikileaks revelations probably did it for Hillary, and its still an open question whether she will be charged with serious offences. There is a story that the Clintons have transferred their two billions to Swiss accounts!

The reality, as it was with the British Brexit vote, is an expression of disillusion and disaffection with standing elites and power structures that have dominated the narrative and policy of the last two decades (at least), both of which have never been more distrusted.

However we should be wary of where populism and nationalism can lead. Xenophobia and militarism make for an explosive and destructive mixture. Retiring behind walls is neither a realistic or optimistic vision for the future.

'Trumpism' is a form of National Socialism insofar as it combines working class focus with patriotic rhetoric. It displays similar elements of victim blaming of ethic and religious groups: just replace Poles with Mexicans and Muslims for Jews. There are also ugly wall precedents in Germany and Israel that do not bode well.

Nor should we forget the result of three recent Republican/Bush presidencies. Trump is merely the head of a Republican machine in Congress, that has proved from past experience to be deeply corrupt and dangerous both to its own people and other countries. Will Trump reinforce this track record, or reverse it? In other words will the political outsider chime with the Republican Party or defy and challenge it?

Trump said it "Ours wasn't a campaign but rather an incredible and great movement, made up of millions of hard working men and women who love their country and want a better brighter future for themselves and their families." (They) "expect it to serve the people and serve the people it will."

One of the first predicted financial actions of his presidency is apparently to reduce the tax rates for the wealthy and for companies. "He want to emulate Ronald Reagan," it is said.

This is where dreams meet reality in a capitalist economy, in which the social and economic chasm between rich and poor has never been greater, or the country's indebtedness more catastrophic. Will the "hard working men and women" benefit from his election and policies? We shall have to wait and see but what think you?

Meanwhile next morning...

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
