Salah Abdeslam, the Belguim-born French national of Moroccan descent who has been accused of involvement in the attacks in Paris on 13th of November 2015, is apparently losing his mind at the Fleury-Mérogis prison, according to L'OBS. Abdeslman who has been held in solitary confinement for a year and a half is now suffering from prostration, paranoia and irritability which pushed the judges to loosen the detention restriction.
Glass was removed from his room's windows to allow Salah Abdeslam to interact with his relatives. Only his close family can see him, especially his mother. After every visit, Abdeslam will be systematically searched before returning to the cell.
There is also a walk-in area on the roof. He can go there one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon. He may also pray in the cell with, at his disposal, a prayer mat and a copy of the Koran. Finally, the plexiglass which obstructs the window of his cell will be dismantled, according to a source in the prison direction, quoted by Le Figaro.
However, Abdelslam's detention condition remain draconian. Salah Abdeslam is filmed by half a dozen cameras 24 hours a day. Eight people are dedicated to keep an eye on him and he is not allowed to communicate with other inmates.
Since his transfer from Belgium to France on 27th of April, the From: key suspect of the Paris and Saint-Denis bombings, which killed 130 people, is silent.
In October 2016, Abdeslam's lawyers announced they had resigned due to their client, Abdeslam, refusing to speak to them. A member of the defense team stated that Abdeslam was refusing to speak in response to his disagreement with the 24-hour surveillance of his cell.
